Trees and blocks in Wakefield
Wakefield began in 1843 as Pitfure. St John’s Church on Edward Street, built in 1846, is described as the country’s second-oldest surviving church, and Wakefield School may be the oldest school still in use. Lifestyle blocks make up a big share of Wakefield, and many homes are large family houses built in the 2000s.
Big conifers belong to this valley. The St John’s churchyard holds Category A coast redwoods and giant sequoias, Wakefield Recreation Reserve has a Category A deodar, redwood and tōtara, and more Category A redwoods stand on Eighty-Eight Valley Road and at Baigent Valley Road.
Fire is part of the picture here too. The Pigeon Valley fire, which started on 5 February 2019 during a drought, saw about 3,000 Wakefield residents evacuated and was for a time the largest wildfire in New Zealand.

Before you send a Wakefield job
- For a block near pines or gums, Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s guide for homes near vegetation is a clear brief: nothing that can carry fire within 10 m of the house, tree crowns 3 to 6 m apart out to 30 m, lower branches lifted to 2 m, and a clear 4 m by 4 m driveway.
- On a lifestyle block, say how the truck reaches the tree: the gate width, the paddock surface and how wet it gets in winter.
- With 77% of Wakefield homes burning wood, say up front whether you would like the trunk left in rounds to season.
