Trees and blocks in Upper Moutere
The village began as Sarau, settled by about 140 German immigrants off the St Pauli in 1843, and took the name Upper Moutere during the First World War. German settlers brought the region’s first grapes. By the late 1920s the Moutere Hills behind Māpua and Ruby Bay were mostly orchard, and in the 1930s depression many orchards were pulled out and planted in pine.
The village itself is small, with more homes spread across the Moutere Hills around it. Nearly every property here is a lifestyle block, more than anywhere else we cover, and most houses were built in the 2000s.
The Moutere Highway carries some of the district’s landmark trees: a Category A Eucalyptus macarthurii at the Neudorf Road corner, named in the council schedule as a landmark tree, the oaks of Five Oaks Farm, a giant sequoia on Old House Road and a blue cedar on Neudorf Road.
