Trees and properties around Motueka

The town sits near the mouth of the Motueka River on a small plain, with the Arthur Range to the west and the Moutere Hills to the south. It is the district’s second-biggest town. Most of the houses date from the 1970s, with lifestyle blocks on the edges of town. Apples, pears, kiwifruit and hops are grown all round it, and until the early 1980s it was the country’s tobacco centre.

Motueka’s big trees are well known locally. The council schedule lists three Category A northern rātā on High Street, a giant sequoia in Memorial Park, the kahikatea of Fearon’s Bush, an oak and a bunya pine at St Thomas’s Church, and the gums and Norfolk Island pines along Motueka Quay and the golf course. Several Motueka Ward entries in the same list are trees that fell in storms.

NIWA’s figures make Motueka the calmest station in the region, with a mean wind of 5 km/h, but the big weather still arrives. The November 2014 hailstorm was worst around Motueka, Riwaka and Lower Moutere, and in the 2025 winter floods the Motueka Valley was among the hardest hit.

Before you send a Motueka job

  1. About half of Motueka homes (49.5%) heat with a wood burner, so say whether you would like the trunk left in rounds for firewood.
  2. If a tall row or shelter trees run along a boundary with lines nearby, mention the lines and send a photo of the whole row.
  3. Check the street in Schedule 16.13B before planning work on a big old tree. Motueka’s list covers High Street, Pah Street, Fearon Street and the Motueka Quay gums.

Nearby: Riwaka, Kaiteriteri, Upper Moutere, Māpua. All Tasman towns
