Trees and properties in Riwaka
Europeans settled Riwaka in May 1842 on former swamp near the river mouth, and the valley went on to grow tobacco, hops and apples. Riwaka is the heart of New Zealand’s hop growing, and the research centre here bred the Riwaka hop in 1997 and the Waimea hop in 2012.
Most homes here heat with a wood burner.
Main Road has a run of listed trees: a pin oak, a rimu, birches and a tōtara with a Phoenix palm near the butcher, plus a big Eucalyptus globulus in a field at the SH60 junction. Ex-cyclone Gita flooded the Riwaka Plains in February 2018 and fallen trees closed SH60 north of here, and in the November 2014 hailstorm orchard trees broke when hail nets collapsed on them.

Before you send a Riwaka job
- For trees along hop gardens and orchard rows, say where any lines run and send a photo of the whole row.
- After a hail or wind storm, photograph broken limbs and any collapsed netting from a safe distance before anyone pulls it free.
- Main Road has several listed trees. Check Schedule 16.13B for the address before planning a removal along the road.

What people say about Oliver and the team
Oli was very professional and safety conscious, very accommodating and friendly. More importantly he did a great job, no mucking around. Definitely would recommend
Urban Forest did a great job in our garden. We weren't sure what to do with our trees but Oliver explained things really well and helped us find a solution. He then did a great job and cleared everything up as if he had never been there. I will definitely have them back in the future.
