Trees and sections in Brightwater
The town sits on the banks of the Wairoa River, and a memorial on Lord Rutherford Road marks Ernest Rutherford’s birthplace at Spring Grove, on its southern edge. Summers are hot and dry, frosts are common in winter, and vineyards fill much of the land around it. Most houses date from the 1990s, with lifestyle blocks around the edge of town.
Spring Grove has some of the area’s listed trees: a Category A coast redwood in the recreation reserve on Lord Rutherford Road South, a macrocarpa on Higgins Road and a river red gum on Barton Lane. Two of the four deodars on Factory Road have already come out under resource consent.
The river is the other factor. Brightwater and Spring Grove both flooded in the June 2025 storms, and State Highway 6 between Brightwater and Belgrove stayed closed until 12 July.

Before you send a Brightwater job
- Check the address in Schedule 16.13B. The Brightwater and Spring Grove entries include the reserve redwood, the Factory Road deodars and the Higgins Road macrocarpa.
- If a flood or storm has undermined a tree, keep everyone clear of it and send photos taken from a distance rather than starting on it yourself.
- Next to vines, a glasshouse or a garden you care about? Say so, so the team can plan where each branch and section is lowered.
