Trees and blocks in Appleby
First settled in the early 1840s as Waimea West, Appleby was one of the district’s earliest farming settlements. Springfield, St Alban’s Church and Stafford Place are Heritage New Zealand listed, and Appleby School has been on its site since 1859. The irrigated river soils grow vegetables, apples, kiwifruit and grapes.
Most of Appleby’s properties are lifestyle blocks, with many big family homes built in the 1990s. The Appleby climate station records a July mean minimum of 0.7°C and a record low of −9.7°C, and snow settled here in August 2011.
The oldest trees line the roads: an English oak and a dawn redwood at Appleby School, a yew at St Alban’s, oaks at Pugh Road and on the Appleby Highway, and a Category A London plane at Sts Peter and Paul Church on Waimea West Road. Redwood Valley, in the hills behind, is covered with Appleby.
