Trees and sections in Māpua
The village grew up round a wharf that was shipping apples by 1915. The old cool store now holds restaurants and galleries, and a ferry crosses the channel to Moturoa / Rabbit Island for the Great Taste Trail. The Waimea Inlet, about 3,455 hectares of shallow estuary, opens to Tasman Bay right here.
Most of Māpua’s houses went up between 2010 and 2019, the newest housing of the towns we cover. New homes are still going up around the village. On newer sections fences, retaining and neighbours sit close, so a big tree here comes down in sections, each piece lowered clear of what is underneath.
Māpua’s listed trees are mostly on Higgs Road and Aranui Road: a bishop pine and a messmate gum on Higgs Road, Camperdown elms on Aranui Road, and a blue cedar and a pin oak in the Māpua Domain. Ruby Bay, just up the coast, is covered with Māpua.

Before you send a Māpua job
- Look up Higgs Road and Aranui Road addresses in Schedule 16.13B before planning work on a big tree.
- On a newer section, note fences, retaining walls and how close the neighbours’ houses are, and send a photo from each side of the tree.
- For a tree on the estuary or beach edge, send a photo from the water side as well as the house side, so the lean shows.
Nearby: Upper Moutere, Appleby, Motueka, Richmond. All Tasman towns
What people say about Oliver and the team
Oli was very professional and safety conscious, very accommodating and friendly. More importantly he did a great job, no mucking around. Definitely would recommend
Urban Forest did a great job in our garden. We weren't sure what to do with our trees but Oliver explained things really well and helped us find a solution. He then did a great job and cleared everything up as if he had never been there. I will definitely have them back in the future.
