Trees and properties in Hope
German families off the Skjold founded Hope as Ranzau in 1844. Ranzau School dates from 1848 and the Lutheran church from 1849, and the village was later renamed after the settler Jane Hope. Its 840 people still live among farms and orchards, with shops run from orchards and market gardens along the main road.
About half of Hope’s properties are lifestyle blocks, and most of the houses were built in the 1960s. Homes run large: 31.3% have four bedrooms and 11.1% have five or more.
Hope’s protected trees sit in the Richmond Ward section of the council schedule: a Category A pear on Hill Street South, a flame tree on Main Road, a mountain ash on White Road and an Italian cypress on Eden Road. The entry next to the pear records a protected tree that was felled in error, a good reason to check the list before a big old tree comes down.

Before you send a Hope job
- Check Schedule 16.13B before felling a big old tree in Hope. One protected tree here is already recorded as felled in error.
- For a shelter row along an orchard or paddock boundary, give the length of the row and mention any lines that run along it.
- If the tree stands in a paddock, say how far it is from the gate and whether the ground takes a truck after rain.
